Hey, what's your ASL?

The Internet is a very interesting place. While I was in college copious amounts of time was spent surfing the web for Interesting story Ideas and the latest political news. Of course, there's a stage in everyone's life when you realize there's more to the Internet than dull stories and the latest academic journal on the Americanization of modern Ireland- thanks MTV. This new found thing is of course gay dating sites.

It's a funny thing, you log on sit back and see what people say. For instance, besides meeting the OpenFM team this week, I found myself lost in the wilderness of 'asl' lingo. It took me around 4 days to figure out what they where talking about and when I did i thought those now meaningless abbreviations had so much potential.

What about, 'wab' which translates as want a boyfriend? or 'ypac' your pictures are cute. They where having none of it apparently. Besides my gay dating antics, the Internet recently came home to the mecca of gay culture in Dublin  - OpenFM.ie.

Ok so maybe it's not a 'mecca' but it certainly is trying to be. Hours of blood, sweat and tears was spent by Sam and Emma slaving over every detail to deliever perfection. Now, it's still a work in progress, but I know you guys will love what we are trying to do.

OpenFM.ie is the gateway to our kingdom with blogs, profiles, music info and the latest news on the station. It's a bit better than those gay dating websites, well sometimes.

I was pretty late coming out. Officially, the 23rd of June 2005, at the age of 31. Most of my close friends all knew, although for me it was like shedding a great weight from my shoulders. Something I had shrouded myself in for years. The word GAY held me still and in some way paralysed me for so many years. I believe now, looking back that I had internalised homophobia. I remember I'd flinch at the word. I'd constantly questioned whether I was normal or some sort of freak that was going against nature. The news starts anew

I never forget my early days as a snotty nosed teenager- fixated with the inner workings of a newsroom. It wasn’t that I was freakishly concerned with how the story was made- I was more encapsulated by how a person could get to be on TV or radio. My first time in a radio newsroom I was made keenly aware that it wasn’t all about look; it was more about the context of a story which mattered the most. I was 17 when i first came across an equally geeky individual, Adam Ledwith, who shared my passion for the look of Sky News- back when they where good. I wasn’t at the time directly working within the newsroom but I found myself finding home at the political correspondents desk to answer and make calls for the late night talk show I interned on. Well what can I say Open FM is going smoothly and looking great, all down to a fantastic team that I can happily say have given me the chance to get involved!
